Thomas Adcock
New York Law Journal
September 7, 2001

Everyone in the New York legal world, from the nail-biters to those who say they’ll remain unaffected, has been talking about the recent layoffs in California. But so far, while there has been talk of firms reassigning associates and scaling back on hiring targets, no major layoffs have surfaced. Still, many wonder whether the subtle signs of disturbance in New York law firm hiring practices are a precursor to layoffs.

LAWYER WANT-ADS DROP, THOSE FOR STAFF FALL FARTHER
Recruiters say the declines reflect caution, not intense concern, about the legal economy

Sandy Lovell
New Jersey Law Journal
May 8, 2001

These days, an increasing number of lawyers are opting for a less orthodox relationship. Whether they are described as freelance, wholesale, contract or temp lawyers, the idea is similar — they work for other lawyers on an as-needed basis, usually for an hourly fee.

Michael D. Goldhaber
The National Law Journal
April 5, 1999

Psst. Wanna make up to $175 an hour and name your own hours? This is not an infomercial come-on or a hallucination brought on by an all-nighter. It’s a real job description that attracts former partners, Fortune 500 counsel and at least one assistant attorney general of the United States. It’s called temping.
